This Thanksgiving, HRC is grateful for our members and supporters and the LGBTQ community around the globe. The past year has been difficult for many in our community, and we are so thankful for those who rallied and stood with us, courageously standing up and speaking out for what’s right and just.
We were shocked and saddened by the attack on Pulse nightclub on June 12. Together, we mourned the 49 heroes, who were mostly young and mostly Latinx, who lost their lives that night. We fought hard battles against discriminatory anti-LGBTQ legislation and brought together a wide variety of allies to take a stand against these hateful bills. We rallied for LGBTQ students and helped drive awareness of today’s HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment and care. We saw historic victories for transgender people—in schools, in health care and in military service—and recognized the parents who are making strides for transgender youth everywhere. We saw the Obama Administration take unprecedented steps to support the LGBTQ community at home and abroad. We honored those who bravely came out publicly and celebrated the openly LGB athletes who made history at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Despite the outcome of the presidential race, we know that the tide has irreversibly turned in favor of LGBTQ equality. Thanks to you and your tireless work, we deployed the largest get out the vote effort in our organization’s history.
As we reflect on the past year, we pledge to work in the years ahead for more and more victories for the LGBTQ community and to end the injustices still facing far too many LGBTQ people. We will continue our fight for equality and justice for all with greater urgency and determination than ever before.
