Post submitted by: Laya Monarez, HRC’s membership outreach coordinator
My name is Laya Monarez and I’m the Membership Outreach Coordinator for the Human Rights Campaign. I’m doing some campaign work with the Pennsylvania Democrats in Doylestown, Penn. It’s a great experience helping them organize their supporters and those who are working to #turnOUT the vote. As a trans woman of color, I’m always a little nervous to go too far away from a city, but everyone here has been really nice and welcoming.
It’s great to hear everyone’s stories about why they are voting for Hillary Clinton and supporting the other pro-equality candidates. I’ve met a lot of locals, as well as people from as far away as Toronto and New York who understand the importance of this election. Everyone knows it’s a close election in this area, and since Pennsylvania is a battleground state, we must #turnOUT as many voters as possible.
It’s been a pleasure to work for the Democratic Party and represent the Human Rights Campaign. Hearing enthusiastic voices and all the willing volunteers is very inspiring. I highly recommend everyone go out and work to make sure we #turnOUT the vote. Volunteers are needed for phone banking and canvassing, and offices still need help making canvassing packages or organizing phone lists. Every vote is going to matter in this election, and as a trans Mexican American bisexual woman, I can’t afford a Trump presidency. I am standing With Her and am doing all I can to make sure Hillary Clinton and other pro-equality candidates win.
Today, there are more than 273,000 LGBTQ voters living in Pennsylvania — a substantial population given that the state was won in the last three presidential elections by an average of 358,189 votes. Pennsylvania is being hard fought this election cycle. This year, both 538 and the New York Times have picked Pennsylvania as the state most likely to be the tipping point state for the presidential election.
